WORCS ATV Pro #7 Justin Waters Round Three in Lake Havasu City, Arizona
Crazy Horse Campground is always one of the most-anticipated races each season for the World Offroad
Championship Series, because of the unique beach-front racing and big crowds that turn out. This year it didn’t
disappoint – racers or spectators.
A Junior at UNLV, Justin Waters has made the trek to race WORCS at Havasu a half dozen times and always
expects the most brutal conditions, especially by race-end. This year though, he was surprised.
“The track didn’t get as rough as it has in the past. That might be because we only went an hour and a half
instead of two. Or maybe it’s because of the equipment I’m running this year; or maybe the extra training I’ve
been doing. It was kind of nice.”
Waters focused extra attention on the suspension of his Yamaha YFZ450R in practice on Friday, working with
Fox Racing Shox to fine-tune his shocks. It paid off.
With a good reaction time to the dead-engine start for Sunday’s Main event, he thought he’d be in the lead pack.
However when he looked over at the first turn, he saw that all the other riders got a good start too, so it was
a full field battle right off the drop of the flag. While the lead riders seemed to have inhuman speed (Jeremie
Warnia and Josh Frederick), much of the pack raced competitively the entire time and there was a lot of shuffling
through the field.
“At Havasu sometimes you’re just glad to clear that lagoon jump the FIRST time! This year that just wasn’t
enough. I had to push myself as long as I could but did finally start going the long way around towards the end –
it just wasn’t worth what it was taking out of me. But luckily so did a lot of other riders.”
Mid-race Justin was running in 10th, then 9th after a clean pit stop for gas and goggles. On the last lap a rider fell
back and he grabbed one more spot to finish in 8th, stepping up to the pay window for the first time this season.
Up next is Round 4, April 22-24 at Cahuilla Creek MX, Anza CA.
