Racetown 395 in Adelanto, CA is known by the WORCS spectators to have high flying jumps, but the racers know it as deep and sharp edged sand whoops. WORCS round 8 this past weekend didn’t disappoint either the spectators or the racers. Before Racetown, Teixeira Tech Yamaha’s Justin Waters was tied in points with Mike Cafro for 9th place in the series points. “I have had a lot of battles with Cafro this year that has made the racing a lot of fun. He beat me by only a couple points last year, and I’m not letting it happen again.
Riders are slowly starting to drop out of the points from injuries and other problems, so my consistency is paying off. I’m still hoping to earn at least 8th in points for this year.”The weekend got off to a little bit of a rough start for Justin with some confusion on how Pro qualifying would work at this round. He wasn’t the only rider with trouble, but the confusion caused him to use a much-slower lap and taking the last gate pick for the main.
The qualifying lap time generally means very little though and his focus was quickly back on preparing his Yamaha YFZ450R for the 90-minute main event.Justin’s bad gate pick may have caused him a less than great start, but he quickly got to work with a fast first lap time passing three other riders and coming through the scoring chute in 8th position.
From there, it was a matter of surviving the sand whoops that were getting deeper every lap. “Unfortunately I got caught by [Josh] Fredericks and [Beau] Baron about half way through my last lap, so I wasn’t able to go out for the final lap and try to chase down Cafro. I lost a point on him, but I am happy to have pulled away with another 8th place. It was another good race for me and my team!”
